Adaptive swim lessons for children with exceptional needs
Volunteer led day swim clinics
How We Do It
Beyond Barriers Swim™ offers an adaptive, one-on-one swim curriculum specifically designed for children with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Our sessions are structured to improve a child’s quality of life through six key areas:
Water Safety – Teaching children to feel secure and understand boundaries in the water
Physical Exercise & Mobility – Promoting strength, movement, and joint-friendly activity
Confidence Building – Helping each child feel capable and proud of their progress
Social Interaction – Encouraging communication, turn-taking, and connection
Relaxation & Sensory Regulation – Using water as a calming, sensory-safe space
Motor Skill Development – Supporting fine and gross motor coordination through guided play and movement

Who We Serve
We provide adaptive swim lessons for children and young adults ages 2–20 with physical, sensory, or developmental differences — especially those in under-resourced communities.
Examples of conditions we work with include, but are not limited to:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Down Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Sensory Processing Disorder
- Physical disabilities or mobility challenges
- Visual or hearing impairments
- We also welcome children and young adults managing chronic illnesses such as:
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
- POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome)
- Other complex medical conditions that may limit participation in traditional programs
What to Expect
Our programs are sensory-friendly, inclusive, and led by trained volunteer instructors. No swim experience is required — we meet each child where they are, building skills, safety, and confidence at their own pace.
